New Year's Resolutions are dead. Long live New Year's Resets.
[Action] BatkoOS for EOY reflection, goal and system setting.
How often have you set a New Year’s Resolution to break it within a month and forget about it by February? We all start the year with the best intentions but don’t follow through.
Or we don’t set a Resolution, because Xmas gets busy and by February when things “go back to normal” it is too late, cause what’s the point now?
And so yet another year goes by without stepping off the hamster wheel to reflect and consider who you are, want to become and where you’re going.
So instead of setting an unfounded, aspirational resolution in an alcohol-fueled moment on New Year’s Eve…
…let me introduce you to your new system:
The New Year’s Reset.
A reset and letting go of the past.
A reset for your goals.
A reset for your habits = who you are. “We are what we repeatedly do.”
A conscious trip down memory lane reflection, which then helps you set the three goals that will make a difference and even more importantly three habits that will improve your quality of life.
Pull out a notebook or the “notes” app on your phone.
Go through the below questions in your own time. No rush!
Try avoiding getting hung up on any of them and capture bullet points or move on to the next question. The important part here is that it gets you out of “auto mode” into some deeper thoughts about your life.
The Reset Template
To give you absolutely no excuses and help you reflect, I’ve turned the below into a Notion template.
And to make sure you actually do it, it is $9.99.
Note: all proceeds go to charity ❤️🔥
Because we all know that we value things more when we pay for them!
1. Trip down Memory Lane
What were the big moments, memories, and milestones from this year?
Pick 1-3 per month.
What things do I look back on most fondly, that brought me the most energy and joy?
People
Places
Habits
Tasks
Experiences
How can I do more of these things in the Next Year?
What things do I look back on less fondly, draining my energy and weighing on me throughout the year?
People
Places
Habits
Tasks
Experiences
How can I do fewer of these things in the Next Year?
How could I be a better:
Son/daughter
Partner
Friend
Manager
Employee
Mentor
What am I most grateful for Last Year?
⭐️ Bonus points for keeping a list of things throughout the year you're grateful for, and reviewing it at the end of the year.
What's on my "best of" list?
Books
Events
Articles
Podcasts
Purchases
New habits
How can I cut through the noise more effectively (and find the “best of” equivalents more effectively)?
What are some things that weighed on me throughout the year?
And what did I learn from them?
How did I grow as a person?
New habits
New priorities
New preferences
New perspectives
🍬 Bonus: capture your year in “Life in Review”.
Here is my version for inspiration: 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019 , 2018, 2017.
2. Key Area Reflection
In this section, you can split your life into areas and dig into each of them.
My current buckets:
Relationships - Partner, Family, Friends
Health
Career
Wealth
Experiences / Hobbies / Fun
Then ask the following questions in each area:
What were my biggest achievements in this area?
And what are the 20% of things that led to this achievement?
People
Routines
Priorities
Environments
How can I double down on these Next Year?
Where did I most fall short in this area?
And what are the 20% of things that contributed to me falling short?
People
Routines
Priorities
Environments
How can I stop doing these things Next Year?
Which area of my life received the most attention?
And which area of my life received the least?
Is this the right allocation of my time, energy, and attention?
3. Self-reflection
Imagine your career as a game & answer the below:
What game am I playing?
What are the rules of the game?
How do players advance?
How do players lose?
Is this game still serving me?
What's the single biggest bottleneck to my continued growth?
And why aren't I relentlessly focused on removing it?
If I had unlimited money, how would I invest today to increase my time, energy, or happiness? How would I spend…
$10?
$100?
$500?
$10,000?
If I repeated my weekly actions every week for 5 years, where would I end up?
Is this where I want to end up?
What are some things I could start doing today that would guarantee an absolutely horrible year?
And how can I avoid doing those things?
Where am I taking myself too seriously?
And where am I making things harder than they need to be?
How am I complicit in creating the conditions I say I don't want? (with my finite resources)
For each of my finite resources - Am I "spending" them? Or am I investing them?
Time
Energy
Attention
Capital
What were the 5 most difficult conversations of the year?
And what are 5 difficult conversations I'm currently avoiding (with both myself and others)?
What's currently nagging me that I could:
Automate
Eliminate
Delegate
And what is it about my current routines that have me overlooking the fact I can do this?
Where do I want to be in 10 years time?
Therefore, where do I want to be by the end of next year?
How could I achieve my 10-year goals in 1 year?
And similarly, how could I achieve 10x my 1-year goals this year?
4. Actionable Goals
Now, review all your answers.
Reflect on your answers and who you want to be next year.
The easiest person to deceive is yourself.
Pick the Top 3 most impactful GOALS you want to set next year.
Pick the Top 3 most impactful HABITS you will establish next year.
The difference here is for Habits to make them part of who you are, practice them daily and weekly, make it a game and above all else consistency and just showing up is key.
The Goals are what you’re striving to achieve, to keep you focused and work towards your dreams.
❌ Don’t set more than three goals. ❌
If you have more than three goals, you have none.
What was the most impactful question for you? Share it in the comments.
Write your “Year in Review” (example) in your notebook or in your personal notes. If you’d like some public accountability share it with me, post it publicly and/or drop your Goals in the comments!
Hold yourself accountable to your habits and systems!
